A drink in the pub is fine. But Devon has moors, a Jurassic coastline, a cathedral city on a river and some of the prettiest harbour towns in England, and a first date with something to do takes the pressure off: you're side by side, there's always something to talk about, and it's easy to end early or stretch out if it's going well. Here are twelve ideas in and around the county.
Out in the open
1. Exeter Quay
Cafés, pubs and a flat, easy walk along the river and the canal. It's simple to find, simple to walk and there's always somewhere to sit. Check the weather first.
2. Haytor and the edge of Dartmoor
A short walk up to Haytor gives you a big view and plenty of room to talk. Check the weather and stick to the paths. Wear sensible shoes, and plan to be back well before dark.
3. Burrator Reservoir
A level path around the water on the edge of Dartmoor, with benches and views. Easy to turn back from whenever you like, which suits a first date.
4. The Jurassic Coast at Sidmouth or Budleigh Salterton
A walk along the seafront beneath red cliffs, followed by a coffee or an ice cream. It's pretty, unhurried and easy to shorten or stretch.
5. The Tarka Trail near Barnstaple
A flat walking and cycling route beside the river, with plenty of benches. A lovely first date for anyone who likes a wander and some fresh air. Check the weather and how you'll get there before you set off.
Culture and a bit of shelter
6. The Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter
Warm and dry inside, and free to enter. Talking about what you're looking at is a natural icebreaker. Check opening times before you go.
7. Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican
The Hoe overlooks the Sound, and the old Barbican district has plenty of cafés close by. It makes a good, unhurried afternoon out.
8. Totnes
A hilltop market town with independent shops, cafés and a castle. Wander, look in the windows and see where the afternoon takes you.
9. Dartmouth and the river
Take a ferry, walk along the quay and find a café with a view of the water. Check the timetable and how you'll get home first.
10. Torquay harbour
Palm trees, boats and a promenade. A stroll round the harbour followed by something to eat is easy and relaxed.
Keep it simple
11. A proper Devon cream tea
Short, sweet and easy to extend if it's going well. Find out early which goes on first, the jam or the cream.
12. A show at the Northcott Theatre or the Theatre Royal Plymouth
From theatre to music and comedy, there's usually something on. It gives you something to talk about on the way home.
A few tips before you go
- Choose somewhere public for the first meeting, and make your own way there.
- Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back.
- Check the weather and opening times before you set off.
- Keep the first date short. If it goes well, you'll have a reason for a second.
