Autumn is my favourite time of year for a first date in Devon. The summer crowds have gone, the light is soft and the air has a bit of bite to it. A walk is also one of the kindest ways to meet someone new. You're side by side rather than face to face, there's always something to look at, and it's easy to make it longer or shorter depending on how things go.
Why a walk works
Most of us are a little nervous before a first meeting, especially if it's been a while. Walking gives you something to do with your hands and your eyes, and the conversation tends to flow without much effort. If it's going well, you can stop for a hot drink. If it isn't, you've had a bit of fresh air and nobody has to sit through an awkward hour.
Gentle walks to try
- Exeter Quay. Flat, easy and full of life, with the river beside you and cafés and pubs close by for afterwards.
- Burrator Reservoir. A level path around the water on the edge of Dartmoor, with benches along the way and an easy turning point whenever you like.
- The Tarka Trail near Barnstaple. A flat route beside the river that's good for a relaxed wander, with plenty of places to sit.
- The coast path at Sidmouth or Dawlish. Sea air and a little drama from the waves, followed by a coffee or something warm to eat.
A bit more adventurous
If you both like a view, a short walk up to Haytor on the edge of Dartmoor is hard to beat on a clear autumn day. It's best saved for when you've chatted for a while and know you're both happy outdoors. Stick to the paths, and remember that the weather on the moor can change quickly.
Autumn tips
- Watch the daylight. The evenings draw in fast now, so a late morning or early afternoon walk is easiest.
- Dress for the weather. Sensible shoes and a waterproof will keep you comfortable, and nobody minds a muddy boot.
- Check the forecast. Have a plan B, like a café or a museum, in case the rain sets in.
- Pick somewhere busy enough. For a first meeting, choose a popular route rather than a remote one, and make your own way there and back.
- Tell a friend. Let someone know where you're going and when you'll be home. Our guide to dating safely has more.
Finish with something warm
The best bit of an autumn walk is often what comes after it. A hot drink, a slice of cake or a proper Devon cream tea gives you a natural place to sit and talk if you'd like to keep going. If you'd rather call it a day, a walk makes that easy too.
